Osman Richardson
Osman Richardson was born around 1843 in Maine to Alvin and Eliza Richardson. His father was a farmer who owned $1,000 of real estate and $300 of personal property by 1860. Richardson grew up and attended school in Jay, Maine. He enlisted in the Union army on October 13, 1862, and he mustered in as a private in Company K of the 28th Maine Infantry later that day. The regiment took part in the Siege of Port Hudson, and it mustered out on August 31, 1863. He returned to the Union army on April 2, 1864, mustering in as a sergeant in Company E of the 32nd Maine Infantry. The regiment took part in the Battle of the Wilderness, the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, the Battle of Cold Harbor, and the Siege of Petersburg. He was severely wounded in the right arm at Bethesda Church, Virginia, on June 3, 1864, and surgeons amputated the limb. He never recovered from his injuries, and he died in Jay on August 24, 1864.
