Friend. Emily. Esq.
                        I take my pen to write you a few lines to let know that I am not dead yet and that I have not forgotten you yet. I am well and hope thes lines will find you the same. we are in a comfortable place as we can ask for we are in a room in the fort it is all stone but the floor & overhead & has 3 fireplaces in it. ther is 80 of us in the room & it is not more than 20 feet long & 12 wide / ther by mighty I have spilt my ink all over my paper thats damn mean    over the whole of it
 
I cant write half what I wanted to
 
I am so mad.
 
I wish that you could come down here and have a game of euchre with us some evening for we play all most evry evening but do not tell eny one for if you do it may make a bad smell round a bout thats all. I would like to come home thanksgiving to go to a good ball & have a roast turkey but as can not I must chow this hardbread & let it go at that it has been snowing & raining ever since last friday morning & the lord only knows how much longer it will storm & he wont tell I wish it clear off for it cold enough to / make a fellow disown his marm tell Hase & Flo that they must write to me as soon as they can & not waite for me to write again till they write. write and let me know how the choir gets along now days. you know who I mean I want you to go to a good ball for me thanksgiving night so I can sleep easy
