William B. Greene Jr. to Susan B. Greene, undated
Sunday Eve

Dear Mother
I have a few more words I want to write and I have nothing to do so I will proceed to so most of the Regt are at work bringing in beef sheep pigs &c and if it was not Sunday night I would go. I spoke about the graves of the enemy being thick around here some of Co As fellows dug one of them to night he was buried separate from the rest so they thought he was a officer and would have a sword or something of that kind buried with him but they did not find any. the 14 Regt N.Y.V. are the next Regt behind us and they swore if ever they get a chance / that they will not spare a wounded nor a sound Rebel they were in the Battle of Bull Run and a few days ago they went there to visit the place and a brother fellow left his brother sitting beside a tree he was wounded and he went there to see if he could find his grave and there he was sitting there by the tree he was some decayed but he knew him by the same mark in his clothing he dug a grave and buried him and all the rest they could find I dont know where I shall be when I write again but I hope it will be in Richmond /

I dont think the Capt calculates for me to go into battle for I brought a round of catrages from Camp Williams and he found I had them to night so one of the Co came in and wanted a round of catrages to go foraging with so I had to give mine up. the rebels must have been short of rations for there horses any way for all around here is dead horses laying in our place there was 18 all in one place and all marked C.S. for Confederate States /

Hare
how are you are you going to enlist in the spring I think you had better stay at home for fat folks dont stand a grate while out here there was one fellow in our Co about the biggest and stoutest in the Co gave out yesterday we marched farther than I told Mother I did not know exactly then but it is 40 miles. the Bull Run fellows had to run 35 miles I can not write any more so

good bye
W. B. Greene
