Grace Brown Elmore
Grace Brown Elmore was born on November 19, 1839, in Columbia, South Carolina, to Franklin and Harriet Elmore. Her father was a bank president and a United States senator. Her father died on May 29, 1850. She grew up and attended school in Columbia. During the Civil War, one historian writes, her “commitment to the southern cause, measured in patriotic fervor and voluntary activities, was strong.” She celebrated the Confederacy as a “great & glorious nation.” She never married, and by 1880, she was living with her sister Ellen in Columbia. She died in Jacksonville, Florida, on June 5, 1912.
