Emmett Woodward
Emmett Woodward was born around 1831 in Tennessee. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1853, and he wrote his thesis on the “anatomy of the eye.” By 1855, he was working as a demonstrator of anatomy at Memphis Medical College.
 
In May 1861, he received a commission as a surgeon in the 154th Tennessee Infantry. According to his service records, he was 5 feet, 6 ½ inches tall, with light hair and brown eyes. By March 1863, he was serving as a medical inspector for the Department of East Tennessee. By 1865, he was working at a hospital in Memphis. He swore an oath of allegiance to the United States on June 2, 1865.
 
He remained in Memphis after the war and resumed his work as a doctor. He moved to Washington, D.C., in the 1880s, and he died there on May 14, 1909.
