Dear Parents
I am seated once more to scratch a few lines to the loved ones at home. We are both enjoying good health and I hope this may find you all the same. My hand has not got well yet but it is on the gain all the time and I am in hopes it will get well after a while. I have done no duty since I came up here for I am excused by the Dr. but I dont know how much longer he will excuse me for it is now nearly a week since I quit doing duty and / he may think I am playing off on him. One thing is certain if I was home I should not quit work all together but there are not a great many men in the Reg't who have done more duty than I have in the same length of time so I think I can afford to play off a little seeing I have only about nine months yet to serve in this glorious cause. James Besemer is somewhat unwell and has gone to the hospital here at Head Quarters but I think he will be around again in a few days. Daniel and I are now tenting with Voorhis Besemer and when Jimmie comes back he will go in with us so we will be / four of us in together We have got a log shanty built and a chimney up but it is so rainy that we have not had a chance to daub the cracks with mud yet but the weather is not very very cold yet so I guess we can stand it awhile longer It has now rained nearly three days steady and no signs of stopping either very soon and if it keeps on we will soon have to be looking for ponton boats to get about in. Herman Curry joined the Co last wednesday night and I guess his furlough was all right and he looks tough as a bear and fat as a pig. In my last I wrote you that we had / received marching orders so we did but we are still here and no prospect of getting away very soon & I think the Army is about through moving for this fall that is the Army of the Potomac, as it was called but I dont think they will see the Potomac again very soon at any rate I dont expect to before next fall. I now think that the two Armies will confront each other here before Petersburg this winter without any material change in the present line for the ground and weather will not permit of many more great moves but I dont pretend to be a prophet nor a son of a prophet it is only guess work at best. My sheet is full so Good Bye
