Dear Parents
Just one year ago this day I was home with you enjoying myself finely and having a good time generally and to day I am many miles away from the paternal roof and the scenes of my youthful days though still in the enjoyment of good health and my family is all well too and all busy writing to their friends. The past week I have been very busy so I did not get a chance to write to you so please excuse my seeming neglect We received three letters from you the past week and shall look for / another to night The past week was quite mild and pleasant for this season of the year untill yesterday when it commenced to rain before we got out of bed and never stopped or held up a bit untill after dark last night. I never in all my life experienced such a warm mild winter as this has been so far down here in Rebeldom. I suppose the season is because we are so far south for you write us about sleighing and snow drifts cold fingers &c and it would be a rarity to see a snow bank in these parts now I tell you it would and more than this I dont want to see any while I am a soldier

In your last you said Charley Mandeville was home / on a furlough. now please inform me what has become of Jim M— his brother.

I suppose now that Fort Fisher is ours Pa will surely think the war is about played but I dont think so. I look for another hard campaign when the spring opens and Pa had better make some arrangements about help for next season and not depend on me and Daniel and me for help for if you do you will find yourself alone next April or I am no prophet I will have to quit writing so that I can put this in the mail bag before it leaves so farewell for this time
