Charles W. Personius to Daniel V. Personius, 18 October 186X
Camp Lesley Near Navy yard Oct 18th
Dear Brother I will now try to write a few lines to you this time I believe it is quite a long time since I have written a special letter to you. I am as well as usual and hope this may find you the same I am quite sleepy and lazy this morning for yesterday I was Corporal of the guard and I only slept about two hours last night which makes me feel rather dull this morning I received a letter from you a couple days ago I also received one from Ma yesterday and the Captain got one from Ella
Ella wrote that you had commenced the fall plowing and it went of quite good I am real glad that you can help Pa so much with his work for it saves a great deal that he would have to hire besides it is a great benefit to you to learn how to work but enough of this Daniel according to a promise that I made you I will now send you two dollars of Confederate money it will be of no use to you except to look at indeed I think it is quite nice. yesterday the officer of the day arrested two of Co. D. boys for being drunk and quarrelsome he marched them to the guard house put them in and told them to fight it out He ordered them to pull off their coats and go in so they did they clinched each other in the hair tore one anothers clothes and cuffed each other about untill one of them thought he had enough of it and gave up They were so drunk that they could not hurt each other very badly Walker is officer of the day to day The company is out on drill this forenoon I am exempt untill this afternoon Hiram is on guard to day they are more strict here than / at Elmira. It is quite a privilege to be a Captain Brother as I have privileges that others do not have I am in his tent writing to you now. You wrote that you had been to an apple cut to Mr Tuckers I suppose you had a bully good time of it for you can generally enjoy yourself if any body can it is about the same with me I enjoy myself first best down here in Dixie though I am denied of a great many luxuries that I used to get at home I wish that I had some good buckwheat cakes and honey for dinner but it is no use of thinking of thinking about such things now it is about time for the mail to leave so I will bring this to a close Write often to me and I will answer them soon as possible. this from your Brother
Charley who is in the employ of a darn good fellow
