Dear Parents
Thursday evening and I will write a few lines to go with tomorrows mail we are enjoying our usual good health and I hope this may find you all as well but to come to the subject which I write this letter for I think there is a chance for Charleys promotion from this Regiment into the 2nd Duryeas Zouaves the 165 N.Y. Vols which Regiment is now at New Orleans Maj Gen Banks Department
I have corresponded with the Colonel H R Foote and he says he can give him the position of 2nd Lieutenant upon his presenting the proper certificates of character learning and ability and his paying such an amount as it would cost to raise the necessary number of men to entitle him to such position which expense he estimates at 25000 Now my idea of this is that it is a good chance and probably better than any that may again offer. Charley thinks as I do about it and has signified his willingness to accept of the offer
Now I am willing to do all that lays in my power to secure him / the position for him. his length of term will not be increased as the Regiment came out about the time he did and then we probably shall not be together after august if I leave the service and further he is going into an army of occupation where soldiering is a mere pastime
hoping to hear from you soon
I am your affectionate son
W. V. Personius
