Charles W. Personius to William Personius and Julia A. Personius, 29 April 1864
Camp Near Stevensburg Va April 29th 1864
Dear Parents
It is now with pleasure that I seat myself to pen a few lines to you to let you know how we are getting along away down here in Virginia eleventeen miles away from all civilization The Captain and myself are well but Daniel is not and I think he has got a fever together with a bad diarrhea so he dont feel very well. He has been to the doctors now for two days and is excused from duty for the present We are now encamped in a nice peach orchard and the trees are in full bloom besides this we are in a splendid place and / a healthy one I think and have good water for this country. The weather is cool and dry and the roads are getting to be in good order. Day before yesterday the 2nd Corps was reviewed by Gen. Grant and this Batallion took the right of first Division and were the first to pass in review. I think there was between thirty and forty thousand on review and there is nearly sixty thousand in the Corps so they were not near all out that day but it was a magnificent scene to behold it took about five hours for them all to pass in review and they marched by company front in quick time
Sunday evening and I will try to finish my letter Daniel dont feel any better he dont seem to have any appetite and if he tries to eat anything he is sure to throw it up right away Daniel received a letter from you to day and I received one a day or two ago so I guess we are not forgotten yet and I dont know as I had ought to have complained in my previous letter but I am always anxious to hear from home for that is pretty much all the news we get here now. To day we have had two company inspections besides Dress Parade and our Major is quite particular in regard to our looks he wants us to look pretty clean and neat every time we come out on inspection so it takes considerable time to brush and fix up
you need not send any more stamps to me for the present for I have a good supply on hand when I want more I will let you know
I have not time to write more this time I will write often and keep you advised of our health and doings so dont look for long letters
Good bye for this time
From your affectionate Son
