Charles W. Personius to William Personius and Julia A. Personius, 11 October 186X
Camp Leslie Oct 11th
Dear Parents I thought that I would try and write one more letter this week this makes the third one since I have been in Dixie I have received two letters from you since I have been here to washington one of them went to Harpers ferry and back again before I got it Walker got hold of it and sent it back to me by Elmer Johnson he came back night before last he was sick and had to go into the hospital. he also brought a letter from the Captain it was dated the eight he was well at the time he wrote he wrote that they were under orders to march to Edwards ferry / He wrote that he had sent for his Charley horse if you send him let me know when you do it for Walker expects me to get him and take care of him untill he comes down here and I hope the time wont be very long before he does come for I am getting quite anxious to see the boys Last night we had a very heavy shower the rain fairly poured down but we did not get wet much it has been very dry weather down here ever since we have been here Hiram and myself enjoy ourselves first rate all of the time for we have first best fare We have pork beef rice potatoes coffee tea sugar bread & CoCo
you wrote in one of your letters that you thought the rainy damp weather must be bad for my cough but let me tell you that I never had to cough less than I do at the present time Camp life agrees with me so far and if it goes so all through this war I shall be as large when I come home as Old Squire Lounsbury is Julia wanted to know if she could have my ink stand she may have it for I have no use for it because I bought one while at Elmira Dick Personeus and Hiram and I all tent together in one tent
yesterday we were all inspected over again and I guess that none of the boys were thrown out if there had been any that were / not fit for field service they would have been detached for hospital guards you wrote that you were a going to send us a box of things if you do I should like to have you send my best hat to me for it would be a great deal more comfortable when the sun pours right down on a fellow as it does sometimes down here in this region though I think this is a delightful climate to live in the soil is not the best in the world yet it is very easy to till there are quite a number of plantations between here and Baltimore that have been worn out and then left to grow up with bushes my sheet is about full so I will close you all good bye this from your affectionate son
