Charles W. Personius to William Personius and Julia A. Personius, 4 December 1863
Dec 4th 1863 Camp Near Navy Yard
Washington D.C

Dear Parents
I now sit down to pen a few lines to you to inform you that we are all well and back again in our old camp. We arrived here about six O'clock last evening and a happier lot of boys are not to be found. We found our tent and stove all right just as we left it. the orders for moving having been countermanded and it is not probable that we will move very soon Dick is getting to be pretty tough again and is now cooking for the company with Joshua Kendall

The weather is fine and the roads are in good condition. I learn by the papers that Gen Meade has fallen back to the north bank of the Rapidan river but Gen Grant is the man that does the fighting and he does it up brown too. I will not write much this time for I must go at work mending and brushing up my clothes. Our mail leaves at twelve O'clock. I have just been over to see Hice he waits untill about ten o'clock before he gets up and then he sits up untill night

I will close by bidding you an affectionate farewell

from your son C. W. Personeus
