Edmund Sage was born around 1804 in Connecticut to Rufus and Jerusha Sage. He was baptized on September 16, 1804, in Cromwell, Connecticut. He married Elizabeth Williams around 1824, but she died in March 1828. He married Rhoda Merwin on June 28, 1829, and they had at least five children: Elizabeth, born around 1830; Frances, born around 1832; Martha, born around 1833; Charles, born around 1838; and Henry, born around 1841. They lived in Cromwell, and he worked as a farmer. By 1850, he owned $9,000 of real estate. A decade later, he owned $35,000 of real estate and $5,000 of personal property.

 

He supported the Union war effort during the Civil War. As one neighbor recalled, he “raised a flag-staff, on his premises” and hosted “publick, patriotic demonstrations” as he flew the American flag. His wife died on November 27, 1868, and he married a woman named Hannah soon afterward. He moved to Newark, New Jersey, in the 1860s, and he worked as a “dealer in groceries.” By 1870, he owned $100,000 of real estate and $4,000 of personal property. He died of apoplexy in Warren, New Jersey, on May 6, 1877.
