Hiram Lewis Gear was born on December 1, 1842, in Connecticut to Hiram and Jerusha Gear. His father died in 1843. He grew up and attended school in Middletown, Connecticut, and the family moved to Marietta, Ohio, in the 1850s. He attended Marietta College, and he married Cornelia Van Clief on July 5, 1863. They had at least four children: Emma, born around 1864; Albert, born around 1867; George, born around 1868; and Hiram, born around 1869. He worked as a lawyer in Plumas, California, and by 1870, he owned $500 of real estate and $3,000 of personal property. They moved to Xenia, Ohio, in the 1870s, and by 1880, he was working as a preacher. They moved to San Francisco, California, in the late 1800s, and he resumed his work as a lawyer. His wife died in July 1913, and he passed away in Alameda County, California, on April 12, 1919.
