Charles W. Personius to William Personius and Julia A. Personius, 1 October 1864
In Fort Bross One mile
and a half from our old Camp
Oct 1st 1864
Dear Parents
It is raining like fun to day and I am seated in a tent scarcely large enough to turn around in with occasional drops of rain sprinkling through on to my paper and smoking my pipe and trying to scribble a few lines to you. It is needless to say that I am well or I would not be here and Daniel is here too. The Co is all together now with the exception of a few sick ones and some new recruits who have no arms Co F relieved Lieut Taylor of the train the day / before yesterday so I think we will not be separated again very soon at any rate I hope not. There has been heavy fighting going on for the last 36 hours but we have no reliable news yet but it is going on well so far and the Yanks are giving the Johnnies their due proportion of shot & shell from all sides. I heard yesterday that Warren had captured a part of the Rebels works on the left and that Butler was doing a big thing on the right but you will get official information before this reaches you so I wont expatiate longer We left our old camp yesterday at 11 o'clock and came up here on good time Co's E and D came with us and commanded by Major Brainard / Co G occupies the fort and Co. E holds a rifle pit on the right of it and Co D a rifle pit on the left of it. G is color Co and the writer of this carries them the Colors and let the Johnnies come if they dare We have a small party of Cavalry on picket and last night they picked up two Rebs near by We have worked four nights in succession since I last wrote you but no one was hurt and I dont think we will have to labor nights any more very soon. I have just received a letter from you and Walker and was glad to learn that you were all well. It had been a whole week since I received any from you and you will please write us often as convenient for these are rather rough times / and letters from home are cheering you know. I sent to the express office 150 dollars yesterday directed to Pa at Ithaca and Alfred Snow says he sent 180 dollars directed to Pa and says Pa must give five dollars of it to his folks to buy a sheep for Frank with. The weather is cool and a fire in the open air seems pleasant when it dont rain to hard. I will close for this time
From your affectionate Son
Chas. W. Personeus
