Camp Near Brandy Station

Dear Parents
I will scratch a few lines to you this evening to inform you that my health is good and I hope this will find you all the same. Our Company broke camp last night at 5 PM O'clock and marched to Brandy Station a distance of eight miles and it rained nearly all the time while we were marching there. We got to Brandy Station about eight O'clock in the evening and put up for the night and made our beds up on a large pile of oat sacks and slept soundly all night / To day at twelve O'clock we left Brandy Station and marched to this place which is three miles farther on toward the front and we have been busy fixing the roads which are allmost impassable for wagons and this will probably be our principle business for some time to come. The Company is armed with axes shovels and picks instead of guns. What do you think of that now Ours was the only Company which came down here Daniel stands the marches so far pretty well. Voorhis Besemer is almost down sick and I cant find out what ails him

I have enquired of George about that money you spoke of and he showed me a receipt for $85.00 eighty five dollars addressed to Alonzo B. Northup expressed to Slaterville, Tompkins Co N.Y. and as there is no express office at Slaterville it will most likely stop at Ithaca. He has sent no money to any one else. In the first place he said he had sent the money to Pa but when I asked him to show me the receipt I saw that it was directed to Northup You know that George cant read or write and that will partly account for his blunder The Captain has not joined us yet and I have not heard from him in five or six days / I have not time to write more to night so good bye

From your loving
Son      Chas W Personeus
