Charles W. Personius to William Personius and Julia A. Personius, 25 March 1864
Camp of 50th N.Y. Engineers
Washington D.C March 25th/64

Dear Parents
I will scratch a few lines to you though I have no news to write except to inform you that we are all well but the Captain and he is grunting some with his throat but it is nothing very serious. I received a letter from you this afternoon and was glad to hear that you were all well. I see by your letter that Pa has sold his Shurter farm. I wrote you in my last what I thought about it. I guess it is the best thing he could have done with the place for he wont have any more trouble with it now / and I hope you will take the world a little easier now and not be always making slaves of yourselves for you know there is no need of it. It is not the wish of your children that you should do so and I am glad that you have let the place on which you live. You did not tell us how or on what terms Uncle John was to work the farm. Please let us know in your next letter

Well Mother it is just nineteen months ago to day since I enlisted. How short seems the time to me. I think it must be because I have always enjoyed such good health since I came into the service I only hope it will it will continue good untill the end and then I shall be amply repaid for the many privileges I have sacrificed by entering the Army for it has been a good schooling for me and no man that ever gets out of the service will ever repent being a soldier

Saturday morning March 26th

We are all usually well this morning. The ground is very wet and muddy this occasioned by last nights rain. The weather of late has been very bad and unfavorable for any movement of the Army which they might wish to make

I think we have got a man at the head of the Army which will make the Rebs hunt their holes this summer. I have reference to Gen. Grant. His head quarters are in the field

Good bye for this time. excuse the shortness of this letter for the / Orderly says I am on a detail for work to day and I must go immediately
