Charles W. Personius to William Personius and Julia A. Personius, 2 July 1864
Camp Near City Point Va
July 2nd 1864
Dear Parents
It is now six o'clock P.M. and is getting some cooler than it has been so I will scratch a few lines to you to inform you that we are all enjoying usual good health & I hope this may find you all the same. Daniel received a letter from you last evening which came very receptable. The tea came through all right and is all used up already. Since I commenced to write this letter I have sold my watch I got 28 dollars for it which was five more than I gave for it. It is rumored in camp to night that we are to / move some three or four miles from here to morrow morning It seems kind of tough to to break camp just to go so short a distance seeing we have such splendid quarters here besides tip top water and plenty of it too I am afraid we wont get good water again right away it is such dreadful dry times here
July 4th 1864
Dear me will I never get this letter finished. It seems as if I had been a whole week trying to get an opportunity to finish this epistle I received two papers from you this morning and in one of them I noticed the marriage of / Louisa Culver and Eugene Valentine of Ithaca they were both schoolmates of mine while I was at the Academy and were both important persons in their own estimation, especially Louisa She is L H Culvers daughter, but enough of this. We broke camp yesterday morning and marched about three miles and built up good quarters in the woods where woodticks were thick as Copperheads and just about as troublesome
The mail leaves now so good bye
