Charles Grant was born on March 26, 1827, in New Hampshire to Francis and Mary Grant. His father was a stationer who owned $2,500 of real estate by 1850. The family lived in Exeter, New Hampshire, and his mother died sometime before 1850. He married Louisa E. Payson on December 20, 1853, and they had at least two children: Mary, born around 1854; and Charles, born around 1859. He worked as a clerk in Exeter, and by 1860, he owned $500 of personal property. His wife died on August 4, 1871. He moved to Boston, Massachusetts, in the 1870s, and he worked in a “paint mill.” By 1900, he was living in his son Charles’s household in Boston. He died sometime after 1910.
