Alfred M. Sackett was born on April 17, 1822, in Hamilton County, Ohio. His family moved to Springfield, Illinois, around 1828, and he settled in Galena, Illinois, around 1842. He married Louisa Leet on September 23, 1847, and they had two children. He worked as a potter, and by 1850, he owned $300 of real estate. His wife died on September 3, 1854, and he married Esther Wilcox on November 28, 1855. They had at least four children: Clara, born around 1858; Hattie, born around 1859; Ella, born around 1861; and Edward, born around 1864. By 1860, he owned $6,600 of real estate and $350 of personal property.
He moved to Dubuque, Iowa, in the 1860s, and he earned a living as a lumber dealer. By 1870, he owned $20,000 of real estate and $20,000 of personal property. He moved to Clinton, Illinois, in the 1870s. He worked as a grocery merchant there. He died in Clinton on June 21, 1900.
