Elizabeth Smith (maiden name: McLeod) was born around 1808 in South Carolina. She married William R. Smith, and they had at least four children: John, born around 1839; Susan, born around 1843; Mary, born around 1845; and Catherine, born around 1848. He worked as a farmer in Marlboro District, South Carolina, and by 1850, he owned $1,200 of real estate. Her husband died in 1858. By 1860, she was working as a planter, and she owned $4,460 of real estate and $11,310 of personal property. A decade later, her wealth had fallen to $1,500 of real estate and $260 of personal property. She died sometime after 1870.
