John W. Smith to Elizabeth Smith, 9 March 1865
Richmond Va
March 9th 1865.
My Dear Mother:
I write you a few lines this evening to let you know that I arrived here in safety yesterday evening (8th Inst.) (Sandy is with me). I have not chance or time to write you and extended account of my trip. I will merely mention the fact that after leaving Fayetteville I only had to walk about thirty five (35) or forty (40) miles, coming the rest of the way by Rail Road.
I am afraid you are all at the mercy of Sherman by this time. He was at or near Cheraw the last I heard.
I and Sandy are very well, but a little sore from our marching. Bob Braddy of Marion is here in hospital, and expects to try to get home on furlough in a day or two, or will start then and I expect to send this by him. / I dont know whether you will ever get it or not, anyway I will send it.
Winder Hospital is among the things that were. The authorities have attached it to Jackson Hospital and now it is all Jackson Hospital. Our Division formerly the 1st of three div is now the 5th of Jackson.
Write soon if you can by mail, and if not write whenever you see a chance to send a letter through by hand
Your Afft. Son.
