Charles Chase to Unknown, 17 November 1861
Boston Nov 17th. 1861
Commodore:
I was intending to write to you at the store last evening but the "Old Gent" concluded to leave in decent season so I did not get a chance, didn't feel very bad about it. Friday 15th inst I received $9.50 from N. C. Stowey Stoneham, the other note the Exp. has not been able to collect but hopes to soon Also have rec'd $3.00 from Danl. Martin, in all $12.50, less Exp. 25 cts 12.25 I enclose 12 dollars. I have given the Exp two South Reading accts to collect, a little doubtful I guess they are.
We don't seem to be very near the Seat of War yet. I was really glad to learn that you was still bound to go one way or another. I get a chance to drill a little and but a little. Mr Chase keeps me at the store more than half the time till nearly seven and as our drill hour is from six till seven it is quite inconvenient for me. I shall not be much ahead of the rest of you I guess. And I expect it will be no slight thing to get Mothers consent. I shall learn all I can and hope I shall leave when you do. All well, think of going to Braintree & Weymouth Thursday. I have confounded poor ink today, no better than blued water. Write soon.
In a hurry Charles
