Charles Chase to Roscoe G. Chase, 4 May 1862
Boston May 4th. 62

Dear Ros,
This isn't Nova Scotia where I am but Boston as you will see by the date of my letter. One week ago I hoped to be far from here to-day but I'm not. Doubtless you saw Bowman and learned from him the talk we had. Had I done what I thought was best I should have given him $275. and made sure of the thing but Lewis thought I would be safe to let him go home and see what he could do. thought Uncle Nathan would advise him to make sure of $250. rather than to run the risk. I think at 275. I should have made a good trade, probably cleared from / 100 to 150 dollars. I was to run something of a risk trees might have gone to the bottom of the sea. And it is very hard times down there, they cannot sell their goods as they formerly did and probably many will be found without funds or any prospect of having any very soon. I think I should do about the same thing another time. I don't know that I care about the risk without a deep margin for losses.

This is a fine day, one of the finest of the season. I attended church this morning and think of attending this afternoon. After that may take a little walk on Beacon St. That is where the styles are to be seen Sunday after church. Two weeks ago to-night I had a very pleasant walk there, most equal to Gardner's Hill. / Do you take any walks or rides this spring? Perhaps it's not very dry with you yet.—Probably some good-looking young man sent the valentines to Addie and Laura. How is your Division getting along? Ours is gaining slowly. We have some very nice members both ladies and gentlemen and some that are not. The last are already threatening to leave if certain ones are to rule the Division and certain ones are helping them along all they can. I heard an old lady giving it to us good the other night. "If those young snobs are to rule I shall leave and I am not the only one that will do so". Go it old lady is all we have to say to you and your style.

Where is Frank this spring? I have not heard from him for a long time. If he is out of writing material I will send him some. / When does Ham. leave for Call? I wish I could see him longer than what little time he will stop here. Are you farming it any yet? I suppose George is with and enjoying himself. I hope he will not forget that he owes me a letter, and Howard too

Georgia is quite unwell. Her throat is again troubling her. I have not been out to see them this spring. John was in a few days since.

Nothing new in the Tip line. The case is still in the Patent Office. How long it will stay there no one knows, till the DC calls for it I guess. Several of his imps have called but have not been able to get hold of it.

The war goes on well. Probably your Reg't is at New Orleans to-day. I hope they will not have to remain there long. I expect Abbie has written me a good long letter today. If she hasn't I'll be after her. Write soon.
