Charles Chase to Unknown, undated
Sunday morning.

A steamer leaves for the North to-morrow morning, mail closes to-night and I will add another line just to say all quiet and well

My baked beans did not taste as good as I was expecting, were stone cold. Our cook is a lubber. The other morning we were to have hash and all made up our minds for a tip-top breakfast. Come to taste of the hash it was cold. cook made a mistake and got up three hours before time, dished out the breakfast and let it set there till we come. He leaves this week and all are glad.

After breakfast I took a bath in the Trent, put on my clean clothes, came back and arranged things in my bunk, blacked my boots, brushed up the room and so on. am trying to make it seem like Sunday. Soon we / must go out for Co. inspection and this after-noon the whole Regt. is "mustered in", that is we are all drawn up in line of battle, all the equipments on. we are then inspected by by the Gen or one of his aids and then our names are called off and placed on the pay roll which is then sent to Washington and if it's correct 'tis returned checked and then we are paid off. We shall not see the money till the last of Sept.

I wonder where you are this morning? in the orchard? you see I think of the fruit, I just love apples and wish I could get three or four every day. This is a hard place for money, the only way not to spend it is not to have it. When one sits down to a dinner of very salt hard beef crackers and water, if they have any money they are quite apt to buy a pie or sheet of ginger bread to top off with. I have got down to less than 50 cts. And while I think of it when you write and have plenty of postage stamps send me some and charge the same I can soon use up a dollars worth. cannot very often buy them here and when the P.M. does have them it is about impossible to get the specie to buy them with. don't take bills. Our money is 5 & 10 Treas notes. N.Y. 1s and Sutlers tickets. cannot get a bill changed for a small amount

We are having another fine day, have had but two warm days since I came here, never saw finer weather. I wish I could take a trip out into the country but I am not my own man and must remain near the quarters. presume I shall go to church with the "orderly". Write often and good long letters. Send papers.
