Francis J. Parker to John A. Andrew, 29 November 1861
No 4 Winthrop Square
Boston November 29 1861
Hon John A. Andrew
Dear Sir.
I sincerely hope that my note, to Col Ritchie, of the 27 did not convey to your mind any idea of unsatisfied aspiration on my part for I felt complimented by the tender of a command which that officer had informed me was appreciated by you as above its nominal rank but my declination was the result rather of the consideration of the importance of the position as compared with my other obligations.
I had lately, under the conviction that my services in a military capacity would not be wanted, resumed my implication in business affairs to such an extent that extrication had become difficult and without loss probably impossible; and it was in this view of the case that I hesitated to accept the position.
But if your excellency, embarrassed, in the selection of a commander, claims the acceptance, of my patriotism—I accept—and although failing to recognize in myself the qualities which you enumerate as desirable I will yet endeavor to do my duty.
Very respy
