John A. Andrew to Francis J. Parker, 5 January 1861
To Hon. Francis J. Parker
My dear Sir
I avail myself of yr recent patriotic note to me to suggest that I wd be glad to have a request made to me to order a salute of 100 guns to be given the national flag to be hoisted at public places throughout the Commonwealth at noon on the 8th of Jany, if some leadership Democrats will sign the request (the names of others to be added—but let Democrats lead).
I hope that a concerted demonstration of this sort would encourage the President to sustain Major Anderson where he now is. Shall I hear from you today?—
Yrs Very Truly
J A Andrew
