Boston June 9th 1862
Coln Parker
Dear Sir
In ansr to the proposition of Capt Stevenson, the position of Sutler would not suit my taste. I sought and obtained a 1st Lieut Commn for the purpose of being Quarter Master of the Regt. in the event of that failing, I am liable to be placed in any one of the 10 Compys that you may select.
In entering the service and making a sacrifice of business, I did hope to be placed in some position where I could serve my country, consequently leaving the Battn. Whilst at Fort Warren I did not regret / but now there is a prospect of going into the field, I feel entirely different, and should much regret leaving. I do not however wish to occupy any position under you where I should be an annoyance.
My desire is to command some one of the 10 Comy in the Regt other than Co C. and you alone can give me that command, otherwise I remain a 1st Lieut, except you give me some tangible reason why I should resign.
When I returned home it was late Saturday night I saw Coln W Brown, A.A.G. on Monday morning I saw the Gov he appeared quite willing I should commence recruiting in accordance with / your order and requested me to call on Genl S[?]ler. I did as directed when the whole arrangement was changed. Coln Perkins relieved from the position of recruiting Officer, and myself waiting your orders.
As they recruit men I think 6 weeks will expire before you see the 4 Cos required. I believe I can do more than any other man with proper permission in filling up the Regt.
As you recommend, his Excellency will do.
Most respectfully
Yours to serve
Jonathan Peirce
1st Lieut 32d Regt
