Daniel S. Donelson to Elizabeth A. Donelson, 4 October 1861
Camp Beauregard
Oct 4th 1861
My Dear Mother,
I rec'd your letter on the 1st inst bringing the sad news of Rosa's death & I assure you no one was more grieved than myself. Yet I hope she has gone to the better Land. I never appreciated her sweet tone of voice, her humor & winning ways before & I know it was a great affliction to you & Pa. I know however it was a great consolation to you to remember that the Holy Book says "Suffer little children to come unto me for of such is the kingdom of heaven".
We are now stationed at Camp Beauregard, 7 miles above the Tennessee line on the New Orleans & Ohio R.R. 40 miles below Paducah for what purpose I do not know. We are in a very / poor country, especially for water We have 230 sick to day out of our 800 men being more than one fourth.
We are now in the 6th Brigade commanded by Col Jno S Bowen who was a Lieut in the U.S.A. It is too bad, but I hope & trust that we are under the guidance of Providence for if we are not we are in a blue way.
If you write to me send it by some one or there will be no certainty of my getting it.
Uncle John is well,
With love to Pa & all at home
I remain
Your affectionate Son
D S Donelson
