Daniel S. Donelson to Andrew J. Donelson, 30 January 1862
Head Quarters 25th Miss Regt
Bowling Green Ky
Jan'y 30th 1862

My Dear Father
I received your letter dated Jan'y 28th today and I am sorry you had not received the last two letters that I have written. I also wrote two to Dr Currey & one to Uncle Jack Martin. Uncle John left here yesterday for Memphis, but I suppose will be too late to see you. There is no news here of interest. You have doubtless heard of the disastrous defeat of Genls Crittenden & Zollicoffer, & the disgrace thrown upon Tennessians. I will be very glad to see the war ended but wish those Regiments to wipe away the stain upon their character first. We have nothing here but mud & rain At work every day upon fortifications I think we are compelled to have an engagement in this portion of the State soon, although it may not / be here, & do not doubt but that the bad condition of the roads is what causes the delay.

I am glad to learn from Ma's letter that she is so well pleased with the Bottom as well as the children I have no doubt their health there will be as good as in Memphis.

Uncles Billy & Stokely were both well when I was in the old neighbourhood Uncle Billy says the war will never end. None of Uncle Stokelys family were at home. Judge Caruthers & Aunt Sallie were at Dr Hoggats, Uncle Robert thinks the war will be ended this spring or summer.

Aunt Mary Ann told me to tell Ma that she would be very happy to have her spend next summer with her. My health is now as good as ever, I wrote to Dr Currey to send Joe up by the first opportunity. I think there is not the least danger of his running away

Give my love to Ma & all the children & believe me as ever Your Affectionate Son
