Daniel S. Donelson to Uncle, 3 June 1862
[pencil note by another author: Murdered]

Dear Uncle
I send back by Martin & Alex, the horse I bought from Mr Keck. upon examination you will see that he has the "big jaw" now in the right side which you will discover is considerably larger than the left. The left side has been treated for the disease as you will discover from the scar, the skin having grown to the bone Col White says the horse on that account is perfectly worthless & that it was a rascally trick in selling me the horse without informing me of the disease. Enclosed you will find his receipt for / the money. I wish you to make him take the horse back if possible. Rather than have any trouble at this juncture with him I would be willing to lose a reasonable amount for the experience. If he refuses however I leave the matter entirely to your judgment.
We leave early in the morning for the Army which is now 30 miles south of Corinth All are well here except Mrs White who is quite sick.
Give my love to Ma & all at home
Yrs &c
