Daniel S. Donelson to Elizabeth A. Donelson, 21 June 1862
Oxford Miss
June 21st 1862

My Dear Mother
I will leave here this evening for Meridian Miss. where I am now stationed. Aunt Rosa is going with me. I will be likely to remain there for some time.

I hope you will use every exertion to send me a letter. I am anxious to hear from you. Our Army is recovering very fast. As to future movements I can say nothing. Every thing looks very gloomy at the present time, but I hope / by being true to ourselves God will not forsake us. We have comfortable quarters & good water so that the chances for my health will be very good. I hear that the our house is guarded every day & night, but cannot believe it.

Uncle John is well

Brother J. is now Captain, Hickory Rifles, & is strongly recommended by Genl Polk for the position of Major. He is well & enquired after Miss M. Give my love to Pa & all at home & believe me

As Ever
Yr Afft Son
D.

P.S. I saw Mr McLemore in Meridian day before yesterday. he told me Uncle J. had sold the horse for the same amount.
