Daniel S. Donelson to Andrew J. Donelson, 11 December 1862
Near Grenada Miss
Dec 11th 1862
My Dear Father,
I take the present opportunity of writing being the first I have had. I have not as yet been assigned to any permanent duty duty. Genl Maury has recommended that I be placed in the Signal Corps, and I expect to be so ordered in a few days. I have heard nothing from home since the middle of October.
I hope you will allow all the family to remain in Memphis if possible. If you think you will lose your negroes on the plantation, you had better send three or four of the boys who are not married to me I think / I can keep them.
If you wish me to come home I can do so. I am now staying with cousin Bettie Hoffa, who sends her love to all. She is now outside the lines. I know nothing of the movements of the Army. I suppose they depend upon the enemy. Joe is well
I wish you would send me the Lady Mare, if in suitable condition.
Give my love to all
