Daniel S. Donelson to Andrew J. Donelson, 4 July 1863
Vicksburg Miss
July 4th/1863

My Dear Father
To the surprise of every one it was announced this morning that this place was surrendered. Maj G. gave me no notice of it I should have tried to have escaped last night which however is a serious undertaking now. If the enemy does not station guard on the river I will leave to night. I do not know at what time I will leave here if I stay with the Company, either this evening or tomorrow.

I have given all the boys passes to Jackson or Bolivar.

I trust they may reach one or the other

My love to Ma and all the children. Also to Aunt Kate & Rosa.
