Daniel S. Donelson to Elizabeth A. Donelson, 20 September 1863
Rose Hill Septr 20th/63
My Dear Mother,
I have remained here one week longer than I expected when I left you, partly on account of sickness and partly on account of my not having made up my mind what course it was proper to pursue. I must acknowledge however that during the week I have improved but little. The more I think, the more I become confused.
All the arguments of comfort ease & desire point one way, all of sense of duty & honor another. I am not yet willing to acknowledge our defeat, at the same time I see / no prospect for success. Under these circumstances I have decided that I will leave the Army, on account of my health (which I know could not stand an active campaign) and for other reasons which it would be of no benefit for the "world" to know. You may therefore look for me about the 20th of Nov or 1st Dec.
If possible I will see Brother John before I return.
Aunt Rosa and indeed all the family have treated as if I were a brother or son. I will remember them all with feelings of the greatest kindness.
I expect to start tomorrow morning & hope you will give yourself no uneasiness about / my safe return.
Give my love to Pa, Aunt Kate & all at home & believe me
Yr afft Son
D. S. Donelson
