James Scott Jewett was born around 1842 in New Brunswick, Canada. He eventually immigrated to America and settled in Maine.
He enlisted in the Union army on December 26, 1863, and he mustered in as a private in Company I of the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery. The regiment took part in the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House and the siege of Petersburg. He was wounded at Petersburg on June 18, 1864. He was promoted to corporal in August 1865, and he probably mustered out in September 1865.
He settled in Canton, Maine, after the war. He applied for a federal pension in October 1865 and eventually received one. He married a woman named Lydia, and they had at least two children: Emaline, born around 1868; and Hattie, born around 1870. He worked as a farmer, and by 1870, he owned $1,000 of real estate and $800 of personal property.
His wife probably died in the 1870s, and he married Laura Kimball around 1876. They had at least four children: Ethel, born around 1880; Walter, born around 1881; Margie, born around 1883; and Richard, born around 1887. He moved to Jay, Maine, in the 1870s. He died in Jay on June 8, 1923.
