Fishers Creek Va March 4
 
Dear friend
I have just been on fatigue and it rained so hard that we could not work and so I thought I would write to you we are having lots of rainey weather it has stormed here most evry day for a fortnight and is muddy enough as you may suppose. My health is excellent and so is my courage Kimball is well and got a letter from you last night I saw Been to day he is well and says they will not take Charles brother for I suppose you now that he enlisted. We have just got payed off and the boys are just living fast Kimball got all 50 dollars a prity / good pile.
 
            was very glad to here from you and could not help thinking how luckey you was an not to be here on this last ride it was a hard time for us.
 
            I suppose that the folks at Washington are having a nice time to day for it is the seckond time that the Presedent takes the chare we expect some desprit fighting soon we have not herd eny thing from Sherman for a long time the Rebs say that he has got a whipping but I do not know about it yet I hope it is not so I hope they will call the men out here and settel it up as quick as possible.
 
            I stop in the tent with Hammon Atkins & Harlow Hammon sends his love to you and says he is all right. 
 
the rebs are coming in to the union lines quite fast our boys say that they greas there back sides with butter and slip right a long into the union I have not got much news to write onley the boys are all well.
 
Leach and winchester has got back to the Reg we have got forty eight men in the Co. now and it is the largest Co on the ground I have not driled eny for a fortnight and onley been on two dres parade our duty is not very hard now.
 
But I must close for this time
