Obadiah Whittier to A. B. Farwell, 8 August 1866
No Vienna Aug 8th 1866
Col A. B. Farwell
Dear Sir
On arriving home from lately after an absence of several months I find there has been a change of our Post Master and PO location And still some agitation of Post office questions I will here say that I have in no way interested myself in the contests consequent on our little office of which with which you have probably had some acquaintance Myself and family are large contributors to the support of the No Vienna PO doing as (Post Masters say) more business than any other family / As this subject is now agitated I will take the liberty to give you my views in short As I have never had the honor to be made acquainted with our representative Mr Blaine who I understand to be the arbiter in these matters
I do not believe the present agitators are actuated by any high or sincere political considerations I also believe them to be but a very small minority of those doing business at our office
What political influence they may be able to exert you are no doubt prepared to judge The most feeling I ever had relative to this matter was when on account of / the very unfair and unkind representations made placing Mr. S. Morrill and family in an undesirable position I think you are quite well acquainted with them And if so you know them to stand as some of our most respectable and trustworthy people
Previous to the removal to Mr A. C. Hodgkins Mr Morrill had charge of the office for eight years And so far as I knew conducted the business to the satisfaction of the people until it became necessary or apparently so to have something to draw upon to get a removal
Mrs Morrill who has the usual care of the office is a lady of education which with her experience fits her well for the business / It now appears there is existing a disposition of a very few to have this office disposed of to please or gratify themselves regardless of all other considerations How far this ought to be indulged I leave you to judge
Yours Fraternally
Obadiah Whittier
