Joseph A. Gleason to Marilda Gleason, 5 October 1863
Bridgeport Ala Oct 5th 63
Dear Mother
Your letter was recd yesterday and as we are expecting to leave soon I will write today. We have been here about 3 weeks. I saw Dick Little his Regt was camped here a few days I was over to their camp several times Dick is well had just received a letter from his Mother I think the boys have done bravely to all three get clear of the draft they are indeed very patriotic. there is not much news here at present you have no doubt heard all about the Battle of Chattanooga the story has gone north that our Army was defeated but they still hold the town and have not considered it a defeat but the Rebels were defeated for they had orders to take Chattanooga and it was what they were fighting for
Well Mother you say that you hope I will get my discharge from the service but there is no prospect of that for if this Army was to be discharged according to disability to perform military duty I really believe your humble Servant would be about the last one discharged for without boasting at all there is not a man in the whole Army who is more capable (physically) of performing soldiers duty than myself. I havent seen a sick hour in the past year nor did I see the time in marching 200 miles that I could call myself tired. so you see I could not be discharged for disability and money could not hire me to leave the service by being discharged. it has been just 2 years tomorrow since I first enlisted one year more and my time will be out but I am in hopes to see the war at a close before that time. if not will enlist again after making a visit
[upside down margin]
I havent heard from Wm or Matthias in some time we do not get mail very regular I hope you will write soon and as often as you can tell George and Sarah to write
I will now close your Son
J. A. Gleason
