George Washington Young was born on June 2, 1844, in Miami County, Ohio, to George Young and Matilda Reddick. His father was a farmer who owned $1,000 of real estate and $450 of personal property in 1860. Young grew up and attended school in Jackson, Ohio.
He enlisted in the Union army on September 30, 1861, and mustered in as a private in Company E of the 48th Ohio Infantry on December 7. He mustered out in Natchez, Mississippi, on November 23, 1864.
Young returned to Ohio after the war, and he married Temperance Deriah Merchant on February 17, 1870. They had two children: Frank, born around 1880; and William, born around 1881. They moved to Bedord, Iowa, around 1875, and Young worked as a carpenter. He died there on July 30, 1914.
