My Dear Friend: I write to you again, as I think this my last opportunity until we are discharged, or our time is out. When I wrote to you last, we had just returned from the Battle of Pea Ridge to our winter quarters. We tuck up the line of march in a few days afterwards, and we arrived here yesterday evening, and are resting today for to start on a force march tomorrow to the City of Memphis Ten or to Pocahontas Ark, wherever I suppose we are needed the worst.
The Federals are concentrating at or near Memphis I rather think we will go there. I recon we will be in one more battle before our / time is up. We will all be at home by the first of June
Col. I want to pay my debts when I come back from this horable life. I have been very very! unfortunate. I have bought to hosses since I started and it has taken all of the money I could rake and scrape for them.
I was very glad to hear from N.C. I have not got a letter from there since Jan the 9th/61 and you can guess how glad I was to hear from there. I am very sorry to inform you of the deths of Wm S Morris and King Morris was a member of my Company. He is a son of Wm Morris of whom you are well acquainted. There has been a deal of sickness in this Regiment for the last month; but the sick / are all geting better Andy Bryan, Loape Hooker and the Kings are all well at this time.
We have had very fine wether for the last 3 weeks and it continues so. Col. we are now in the finest region of country I ever saw, and this is a fine city and it is facilitated by R.R. and steam boat navigation, but business has hushed here and nothing is to be seen in that line. This state at this time is under Martial Law. every man that can shoulder a gun is now in the field. There is little or no business agoing on neither in city or State.
Col you must excuse my bad writing I write in a hurry and only for to let you know where I am and how I do Your friend R W Murphy /
Col E S Hull
