George W. Jellison to (?) Perry, 14 September 1864
Fort Woodruff Portsmouth
Virginia Sept 14th 1864

Mr Perry Dear Sir
it is with the greatest pleasure that I now seat myself to pen you a few lines to inform you that I am not verry well at present I have had a severe attack of the swamp Fever and do not feel over and above strong at the present time as I have no apatite at all for the army ration it is a poor thing for a sick man to live upon but we have to come over to it it is very unpleasant weather here now as there is a considerable rainy weather and hot days and cold nights enough to freeze one I am better situated than some as there is only three / of us in our tent and we have got a stove so we do not mind it so mutch although we catch it when on guard We have a few sweet potatoes once in a while they go good with our salt horse and get baked beans once a week so if a fellow is well it is not so bad to be a soldier but I am in hopes that this cruel war is almost over and we shall soon be home once more things look bright once again

Write soon and send me three Dollars in green Backs I am in hopes I shall not have to write home for any more but there is no signs of being paid for a month to come We have been mustered for / six months pay but I do not know when we ar to get it it is rather hard for to work so long without money or change of diet I would not send for any if I was well but I cannot live on the army ration and have the fever I must have something diferent you must excuse poor writeing and still poorer spelling

Write all the news and be sure to send the money and oblige
