George W. Jellison was born on August 2, 1846, in Shapleigh, Maine, to Elisha Jellison and Mercy Webber. He grew up and attended school in Shapleigh, and by 1860, he was working as a farm laborer.
He enlisted in the Union army on November 19, 1863, and he mustered in as a private in Company K of the 2nd Massachusetts Heavy Artillery on December 22. He mustered out on September 3, 1865.
He settled in Danvers, Massachusetts, after the war, and he married Hattie Wiggin on August 25, 1868. They had at least two children: Walter, born around 1869; and George, born around 1872. He earned a living as a shoemaker. His wife died in 1872, but he lived in her father’s household until at least 1880. He applied for a federal pension in May 1880 and eventually secured one.
He married Hannah Clark on September 20, 1885, and the couple had no children together. He remained in Danvers for the rest of his life, and he died there of a brain tumor on March 15, 1913.
