Ellen Hill was born around 1848 in New York to George and Emily Hill. Her father was a Scottish immigrant who earned a living as a farmer. By 1860, the family owned $3,600 of real estate and $800 of personal property. She grew up and attended school in Rossie, New York, and she married Josiah Murphy around 1873. They had at least three children: Amelia, born around 1875; Jennie, born around 1879; and Eugene, born around 1882. They lived in Rossie, and her husband worked as a farmer. Her sister Isabel lived with her until at least 1900. Her husband died on April 7, 1924, and she died in Rossie on February 12, 1935.
