George L. Plumhoff to Robey A. Plumhoff, 1 June 1864
New Orleans June 1st 1864

Dear Roby

I write you these few lines to let you know that I am still in good health and sincerely hope that this will find you the same

Also to tell you that Jesse Webb got down here last week. he is well & I guess will make a "good Soldier".

We had quite a fire here last friday night. 8 steam boats & two small schooners. they were supposed to have been set on fire by some rebels as the steam boats were all in the employ of goverment during the burning some shells / exploded on one of the boats causing a rush by the crowd on the levee. Such a running I never saw. Some droped behind barrels, boxes, wood &c. On the levee there lay a great many large iron water pipes & they were full of men who were desirous of escaping the death that they thought awaited them outside. It was amusing to see them peep out to see if the dainger was all over. Some of the crowd lost their hats &c in the rush & did not stop to pick them up. Some of our boys made a good hat in this way.

I sent you by two letters Seventy five Dollars $4000/100 in one letter and $3500/100 in the other. I hope you have received it all right. / the particulars in your answer & tell me if you reced it.

tell me how you are getting along with Mrs Gasden if you will earn much this summer.

I sent my three overcoats up to you. hope you will get them. do with them as you think proper and I shall be satisfied.

the weather has been very, very hot latley, but to day it showers a little now & then & makes it cool Our marching orders have been countermanded & we are now likley to stay here for the summer, as the other troops we were to go / go with have all left the city.

Hoping that you will get the money & coats also that these few lines will find you & little Mary enjoying good health Kiss Mary & just imagine that I have kissed you

Your Loving Husband
George L. Plumhuff
