Goerge L. Plumhoff
George L. Plumhoff was born around 1837 in present-day Germany. He eventually immigrated to America and settled in Trimble County, Kentucky. He married Roby A. Tilley on September 14, 1859, and their daughter Mary was born on April 6, 1862. By the early 1860s, he was living in Bunker Hill, Illinois.

He enlisted in the Union army on December 21, 1863, and he mustered in as a private in Company A of the 97th Illinois Infantry. According to his service records, he was 5 feet, 9 inches tall, with light hair and blue eyes. He spent the next year in Louisiana. In 1864, he observed that the “Rebels are very bitter” in New Orleans, “especialy the women. They insult the ‘Yankees’ wherever they meet them on the street.” He noted that “Registerd Rebels have to leave town & go across the lines…If the Rebs misstake them for ‘Banks’ & fire into them why all the better we can easily spare a few thousand of these traitors.” He died of pleurisy near Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on December 3, 1864.
