George L. Plumhoff to Robey A. Plumhoff, 6 July 1864
Head Quarters 97th Regt Illinois Volunteers.
New Orleans La. July 6th 1864.

My Dear Roby,
I recd your letter on the 1st day of July and was very glad to hear from you. I was glad to hear that you are improving on your place.

I have recoverd my health entirely and am now as well as common. I am badly broken out with the heat as are most of the boys. It is very very hot here now. today promises to be a roaster.

You may sell all those coats I sent home as I can get one here very cheap & it is not worth while to save me one of them. what did you have to pay the Express Company for freight on the coats.

There was a grand celebration of the 4th of July here. Salutes fired by the batterys speeches by Major Genl Sickles & and others &c One Major belonging to one of the batteries got his arm badly hurt by the discharge of one of the guns. the Rebels are very bitter here especialy the women. they insult the "Yankees" wherever they meet them on the streets All the Registerd Rebels have to leave town & go across the lines to their Rebel friends in the "Confederacy" hope they will have a good time of it If the Rebs / misstake them for "Banks" & fire into them why all the better we can easily spare a few thousands of these traitors this order for these New Orleans Rebs to leave comes I believe from Genl Banks.

So the mill at Gillespie rebuilt and running again.

Send me Marys likness as you spoke of. I would like to have it very much. I will send you mine before long.

Now My Dear Wife as to day is exceedingly hot I guess I shall have to draw to a close. Webb is well.

Kiss little Mary for me & accept my

Undying love for yourself

Your Loving Husband
George L. Plumhuff.
