Greenfield August the 7 1862
My Dear Nan I wrote to you
that I was going to war we made up a compny of one and hundred and twenty men we elected our officers and had the time set when we was to start and they sent us a dispatch from harrisburg and said that they did not want us and said that they had as many men as they wanted it gows hard with us I wont go again until they draft me I got my paper for to draft me but I dont think that is fair when a man vollintears and then draft them their hant been abetter Compny left this neck of woods but I suppose it cant be helped I tell you that we made quite ashow when we was called out to drill their is one company to leav mer[?] town but I dont think that they will get in to harrisburg until after the tenth and then they will hav to go for three years if they would of took us we was was swore / en in for nine months I am going back to my old plase to work until they draft me write to me as soon as you get this well nan It went pretty hard to leav all of my friends and thought that I would never get back but it wont gow so hard with me the next time write soon as you get this Good by
