Camp near Alexandrie Sep 5 1862
 
My Dear Nancy I received a letter from you to day & I was glad to hear from my dear & that she was in good helth I was laying down in my tent this forenoon & I was thinken over the times that we had last fall to gather it is the same that it ever was I long to see you & hav a talk with you their is not a day gowes by but I think of my dear Nancy if many miles find.es you & I so many miles apart we may be but our harts is as near as ever if we are spared both of us to meete again we will enjoy our selves to gather if I am spared to come back we will hav a wride to gather out to the Citty of Clevland donte you say so that we will I look at your pictuer evry nite before I lay down to rest & when I arise / I would like to see you for I hante seen a pretty girl since you & I parted last fall up to bristol last fall when we parted I did not think that I would of been hear but we donte now what a day will bring fourth when I come home we will take a viset out weast wont you go along with [?] Nan when does the fair come of out to the Citty of clevland are you going out to the fair if you do I would like to go out with nancy Nan if you gow you must not get run over with the hand cars if you gow tell me all of the wares that you hav hear & your trip Nan do you think that you will get fresh pop corn pop up this morning I would like to see the citty again but I dont now wheather I will ever see the place again or not but I liv in hopes that I will return again & see you & we will talk about what we was talken about Nancy would you marry this solger if he returns Nancy we may / as well talk about it as any other thing do you think that your folks would be agread to you & I getting marriad you will go with me wherever I gow wheather on land or see we rember days that are past & gone well Nancy I cant half write for their is a tent along side of us & the afulest swearing that you ever heard it is in their tent their is not mutch excitement to day in the armey I think that our regiment will gard the citty of Washington that is what our Colonel sayes he is a Brothern law of the Governer of this state I mean Penna our boys are out maken intrenchments to day their is three hundred & fifty of them the intrenchment is two miles long that is for us to get behind if we get in to a fite we must take all of the chance that we can get for the rebles takes it of us 
 
I sent that pin to you I mean that locket mebby that is your present that you are to get or what the fortentellar spoke about ask her to tell my forten now & see if it will be like the one that she told me last fall will you Nancy I got a letter from my brother John to day & he said that they wear al well our regiment is to go out on picket to nite we was out last Monday nite & it rained hard I payed twenty five centss pown for cheese & too centes for an aple & it small some times we get pretty slim grub & then we by some thing you said you would giv me a bucket of water I wish that I had it now to get a good drink of it I hav seen some of the disfigerd people down hear that I ever saw in my life I did not think that sutch looking people liven in this world I close biden you good by & may God protect you from all harm write soon & I will answer it as soon as I get it excuse this bad writen will you & from your friend Josia Dunlap Yours      All tho away in southern lands
