David C. Witherspoon
David C. Witherspoon was born around 1830 in North Carolina to Elisha and Catherine Witherspoon. Her father was a farmer. He grew up in Lincoln County, North Carolina, which became Catawba County in the early 1840s. He married Emily Gant there on July 12, 1857, and they had at least three children: John, born around 1858; Levi, born around 1860; and Nancy, born around 1862. By 1860, he was working as a farmer, and he owned $300 of real estate and $350 of personal property. He enlisted in the Confederate army on July 4, 1862, and mustered in as a private in Company E of the 57th North Carolina Infantry on July 17. He fell ill soon afterwards, and Confederate officials sent him to a hospital in Richmond, Virginia. He died of “typhoid pneumonia” there on October 19, 1862.
